Annual Spring Seminar Attracts Many Interested in Home Landscaping

Kaufman County Master Gardeners sponsored their annual seminar on April 17, 2010 at the Rockwall and Brinn Church of Christ in Terrell. Almost 70 people heard Dale Ham of Ham Orchards, LLC discuss “Selecting and Caring for Fruit Trees in the Family Orchard.” Mr. Ham provided information on specific characteristics and local suitability for over 50 varieties of peaches, nectarines and plums. He also demonstrated the correct way to prune young peach trees.

Dale Groom, Dallas County Extension Horticulturist and Master Gardener Program Coordinator, showed and discussedmore than 15 “EarthKind® and WaterWise Shrubs;” and Brent Clayton, an Extension Assistant with Texas ArgiLife Extension Service, explained “Rain Water Harvesting with Rain Gardens.” There were also refreshments, door prizes, a silent auction, a plant sale and the 3rd Annual Horticultural Photo Contest.

3rd Annual Horticultural Photography Contest

The horticultural photography contest had two divisions: Master Gardener and Public. Darlene Allen placed first in the public division, with N. Heunermund receiving second and Jonie Cross third place. In the Master Gardener division, Marline Ballard took first place, Marvin Dietel second and Whitney Rozell third.
