On March 9, 2013, Kaufman County Master Gardeners sponsored an EarthKind Landscape Design Seminar at the First Baptist Church in Forney. The seminar was in two parts. The morning session was an explanation of EarthKind principles with examples of how they can be applied. In the afternoon, participants had a one-on-one consultation with a landscape designer.

Dr. Steve George, the featured speaker, has been associated with EarthKind since it began. He created and serves as National Coordinator of the EarthKind Environmental Landscape Management Program. There’s nobody better from whom to learn EarthKind principles.

EarthKind landscape principles encourage;

  • Landscape water conservation
  • Reduction of fertilizer and pesticide use
  • Landscaping for energy conservation
  • Reduction of landscape waste going into landfills

These principles and practices can be used to create beautiful, easy-care landscapes that conserve and protect natural resources and the environment. For more information, see Texas A&M AgriLife Extension’s EarthKind Landscaping page

In the afternoon, participants met with a landscaper who worked with photographs of their current landscape and a scaled diagram of their property to give them ideas of how to implement EarthKind principles.
