At their November meeting, the Mabank Garden Club heard Kaufman County Master Gardener Rebecca Morrow talk about ways to make gardening easier as we age. Morrow showed examples and explained ways to use raised beds and containers so that they are accessible to people who are sitting or standing. She also showed a number of tools to make garden work easier, including a variety of cushions and pads to make kneeling more comfortable, several different types of stools and carts to make kneeling unnecessary, some lightweight carts for garden tools, several styles of garden carts that are more stable than wheel barrows and that make dumping easier, and hand tools that extend to reducing bending over, ergonomic tools that reduce strain on hands, wrists and elbows and ratcheting tools that magnify grip strength. Garden club members also received a copy of the 2012 Kaufman County Master Gardeners’ Horticulture calendar.
