Over 100 people attended an educational program on vegetable gardening sponsored by Texas AgriLIFE Extension Kaufman County Master Gardeners on Saturday, February 20, 2010 in Kaufman. Dr. Joe Masabni, Texas AgriLIFE Extension Vegetable Specialist, spoke on the 10 requirements for a successful vegetable garden. He emphasized that the first 4 steps include planning the garden location, soil sampling and plant selection. Steps 5-7 are actual work in the garden during the growing season. Steps 8-10 are evaluating your successes, clean up and preparing the garden for the next season. Dr. Masabni also covered guidelines for proper fertilization and techniques for controlling pests. Soil sample bags and instructions for collecting garden soil samples were given to attendees. KCMGA also held a plant sale featuring tulips, iris and seeds of vegetable varieties recommended by Dr. Masabni for best success in the Kaufman County area. Soil sample bags with instructions are available at no cost to anyone at the Texas AgriLIFE office in Kaufman.
